We would like to share information about the National Breastfeeding Helpline (NBH) and the Drugs in Breastmilk service (DiBM) with your trainee GP's.
The NBH provides free evidence-based non-judgemental, friendly breastfeeding support for all. The service can be accessed via the phone, messenger or webchat. The Helpline has been running for a number of years and is funded by Public Health England via Serco, and the Scottish Government. In 2024 we received funding from the Office of Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) for an NBH@night service making the helpline 24/7! Our Drugs in Breastmilk Service comprises of a bank of 75+ factsheets, and an online service (over email and Facebook) that answers queries on medications and breastfeeding compatibility. We received over 3,000 calls in 2023; and we are operational every day of the year between 8:30am and 8:30pm, with thanks to our team of pharmacists for providing that coverage and great care to each caller. We are currently funded by the Department for Health and Social Care. We are looking to increase our visibility to GP's and wondered if you were able to assist? I have a range of blog/article-type formats, providing information on our service and the topic at hand (topics we have covered already are: Mental Health, Antimicrobials, Breast pain). For example, this is our released public statement on breast pain: An update on our information on, and approach to, persistent breast and nipple pain when breastfeeding - The Breastfeeding Network Updated If Breastfeeding Hurts page: Pain: if breastfeeding hurts - The Breastfeeding Network
